Lush, long eyelashes provide a lovely frame for your eyes – but you may have never had thick lashes, or your lashes may have thinned over time. If you’re seeking longer, fuller lashes, Latisse® is the first and only prescription medication that is proven to increase lash growth and thickness.

What is Latisse?

Latisse is the brand name for a medication called bimatoprost. It is FDA-approved to treat inadequate eyelashes (hypotrichosis). This medication was originally developed to treat glaucoma under a different brand name, and when the product was used, a surprising side effect appeared: the treated patients developed thicker, longer, darker eyelashes. This is how Latisse was born.

How does Latisse work?

When applied topically to the upper lash line, Latisse encourages eyelash growth. It is applied only to the top lid, never the lower lid. To achieve naturally thick, abundant lashes, you must apply Latisse each night for at least two months. The enhanced lash growth will continue as long as you apply the product. If you stop using it, eventually your lashes will return to their original condition. How the product achieves this remarkable effect is uncertain, but we know that the use of Latisse extends the growth phase of your lashes and increases the number of hairs that develop. The result? Lashes that are darker, longer, more dramatic, and more beautiful. And when you add mascara, you can achieve an even more effective look.

Woman with beautiful sharp eyes.

Is Latisse safe?

When applied as directed, Latisse is a safe product. Individuals should put only a small amount along the upper lash line, leaving it feeling slightly wet but not dripping. It will naturally transfer to the lower lid and should never be applied to the lower lash line.

Some types of eye conditions may make Latisse unsafe for you, but this is rare. At South Coast Plastic Surgery, we ensure that we understand any pre-existing medical conditions before prescribing Latisse. Most people are good candidates, and Latisse has been FDA-approved and on the market since 2008.
