Chin surgery, also known as mentoplasty, creates facial symmetry by establishing a more attractive facial balance and proportion. This procedure can be performed in a variety of ways, depending on the underlying cause of the deficiency. Our plastic surgeon may reshape the chin by enhancement with an implant, by surgically moving the chin structure forward (genioplasty), or by reshaping the chin bone. In many cases, chin augmentation is performed as a complement to other facial contouring procedures such as a facelift, neck lift, cosmetic nose surgery (rhinoplasty), or other facial enhancements.

What is chin augmentation?

Chin augmentation surgery at South Coast Plastic Surgery is a 100% custom procedure. It can treat various facial structure issues by doing the following:

  • Improve a receding chin
  • Enhancing a small chin structure
  • Adding volume to the chin structure
  • Creating a more attractive balance with the nose
  • Treating a double chin or sagging neck skin
  • Enhancing the jawline
  • Creating a more balanced facial profile

Customized to create balance

The precise type and size of facial implants best suited for you will require an overall assessment of your goals, the features you would like to change, and your surgeon’s judgment. If you are interested in this procedure, please contact South Coast Plastic Surgery and schedule a consultation with our surgeon.

Microgenia

For those who have a normal bite between the upper and lower jaws but a disproportionately small chin (microgenia), a chin augmentation will help restore facial balance and symmetry. In this case, the procedure usually involves the placement of a silicone chin implant to augment or reshape the chin to restore facial proportion. Depending upon the specific type of microgenia, the surgeon will either lengthen the chin, extend the chin forward, or both. While horizontal deficiency is most common, some cases of microgenia involve horizontal and vertical deficiencies.

Malocclusion

For patients with a dysfunctional bite between the upper and lower jaws (malocclusion), a chin augmentation may not suffice. This procedure will not fix dental misalignment complications or potential issues with the premature wearing of the teeth or temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ). In this case, orthognathic surgery is required to surgically reposition the upper or lower jawbones to create proper occlusion and bite. If more structure is needed following the surgical correction, chin augmentation can be performed.

What is the surgery?

At South Coast Plastic Surgery, we usually perform this cosmetic procedure under “twilight” anesthesia, and we combine chin augmentation with other nose and face surgeries. Our talented surgeons place the incisions inconspicuously in the crease under your chin or mouth, depending on your preference.

Recovery from chin augmentation surgery: What to expect

Chin augmentation surgery is easily tolerated and has a relatively low recovery time. You can expect to be sufficiently recovered for a return to work or other activities within a week. It is normal to experience some swelling, which typically resolves within a couple of weeks. As the swelling fades, you will see your new profile becoming apparent, looking balanced, aesthetically pleasing, and attractive.
