Sagging upper eyelids, which are a natural part of the aging process, is a common concern people have as they get older. Drooping upper eyelids can be caused by other factors besides age. These include surgery and Botox side effects (from the Botox accidentally traveling to the eyelid muscles).

Droopy upper eyelids, also known as ptosis, can cause a number of problems, both cosmetic and functional. Hooded, sagging eyelids can cause you to look tired, older than you are, less alert, or even grouchy. Sagging upper eyelids can also interfere with your field of vision and cause muscle straining and tension headaches. Difficulties can arise with reading, driving, computer use, and other activities.

Until recently, the only option to resolve this concern was eyelid surgery. Today, there is an effective non-surgical treatment to address drooping lids and achieve more open eyes. It is called Upneeq.

What is Upneeq?

Upneeq is the only FDA-approved prescription eye drop that addresses sagging upper eyelids. Upneeq is the only eyedrop available that tightens and lifts drooping eyelids, and opens your eyes.

Upneeq uses a medication called oxymetazoline hydrochloride. Oxymetazoline hydrochloride effectively works by contracting a certain eyelid muscle. This muscle is called the Muller’s muscle. Upneeq makes the Muller’s muscle shorter and tighter, which is what lifts and opens the eyelids.

How Does Upneeq Work?

Upneeq eye drops are applied once a day with one drop in each eye. This helps contract the Muller’s muscle and results in an average amount of 1mm lift in the upper eyelid. You’ll see the results shortly after the drops are inserted into the eyes. The eyedrops remain effective for at least six hours.

Upneeq will not achieve the same lift as eyelid surgery, but the difference is notable and improves both cosmetic and functional concerns.

Upneeq is for men or women who prefer a non-invasive approach to address mild, moderate, or severe eyelid drooping. Ideal candidates should meet the ideal requirements:

  • Are not currently taking any of the following medications:
    • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors

Upneeq provides a range of benefits for those who would like to improve sagging, dropping eyelids:

  • Lifted, tighter eyelids

Should I have Upneeq or Eyelid Surgery?

Upneeq isn’t a substitute for eyelid surgery, as the results are not as dramatic. While Upneeq provides improvements, if you want a more visible change and don’t mind a surgical procedure, eyelid surgery is probably better for you. Additionally, genetically-caused eyelid drooping can be treated with eyelid surgery. Upneeq cannot treat drooping caused by genetics.

On the other hand, eyelid surgery requires incisions and downtime. Upneeq achieves noticeable improvements with simple, painless eyedrops you can apply on your own. There are no drawbacks for those who want to improve age-related or Botox-induced sagging upper eyelids.
