On occasion, surgery must be performed to revise the results of a prior breast augmentation. Not all revision procedures are performed due to complications. In fact, the majority of women — especially those who were treated by board-certified plastic surgeons — are very satisfied with their augmentation results. However, the body changes over time and implants are not intended to last a lifetime. For this reason, many women will require a secondary breast augmentation procedure, whether or not they were happy with their initial results.
This procedure is often more complex than the initial breast augmentation, which why it is important to choose a highly qualified and experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Song, who has years of training and experience performing breast augmentation revision surgery. Using advanced corrective techniques, Dr. Song is able to improve breast size, shape, symmetry and feel, giving you the results that you have always wanted.
If you are not satisfied with the outcome of your first surgery, or if changes have occurred that you would like to address, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Song to see if breast implant revision may be right for you.
REASONS FOR REVISION
Women choose to undergo breast augmentation revision for many reasons. Some of the most common reason include:
- Unsatisfying cosmetic results
- A change in size preferences
- Capsular contracture (scar tissue tightens and hardens around one or both implants)
- Implant rupture or leakage (caused by breast trauma, implant age or implant malfunction)
- Implant rippling, bottoming out, fold malposition and/or symmastia
- Breast implant deflation has occurred
- Asymmetry of the breasts
- Decision to remove implants
- Medical indications such as disease, trauma or surgery
Many women are also opting to exchange their saline breast implants for silicone gel breast implants as silicone gel implants tend to look and feel more natural.
Breast augmentation revision is a surgical procedure performed to remove or replace implants from a prior breast augmentation. It is more complex than the initial augmentation and requires advanced surgical techniques that demand a level of expertise few surgeons have.
Some choose breast augmentation surgery, wherein their breast implants are removed and replaced. Others choose to have breast explant surgery, or breast implant removal, but do not have their implants replaced. When breast implants are removed and the patients decides against the breast augmentation, a breast lift can be performed to remove skin stretched by the breast implants.
Prior to surgery, Dr. Song will work with you to design a personalized surgical plan to treat your specific areas of dissatisfaction.
Recovery following breast augmentation revision or implant removal is typically quicker than your initial breast augmentation recover, however some changes, such as moving your breast implants from over to under the pectoral muscles may result in slightly more pain and downtime.
Following surgery, patients often experience swelling, bruising and discomfort in the chest area for several days. Most women will be able to resume work and social activity within 1-2 weeks. Strenuous activities such as heavy lifting or rigorous exercise may be restricted for several weeks.
