As we age, we see the curves and contours of our faces give way to wrinkles, creases and depressions. Many believe that this occurs because of gravity — that all things fall over time. Yet this is simply not the case. What happens is that over time, the face deflates and loses volume. What was previously believed to be sagging is now understood to be primarily caused by facial deflation.
At South Coast Plastic Surgery, Dr. Song uses facial fat grafting to enhance or restore volume in the patient’s face. In this procedure, the surgeon will transfer small parcels of fat from the tummy and/or thighs to the deflated facial area. Fat grafting can also be used to improve the shape of lips or cheeks, giving the patient a natural-looking, yet permanent augmentation.
This is an attractive procedure for many patients as it is done entirely without any incisions, yet can still help the patient achieve his or her desired goals.

This procedure is a natural, minimally invasive alternative to facial plastic surgery, and is usually completed under “twilight” anesthesia. A small incision is placed within the belly button to harvest a small amount of fat from the tummy. This fat is then run through a centrifuge to separate the desired fat cells. It is then injected through small needles.
Patients can expect swelling in the treated areas, but in most cases, this resolves within a couple weeks. Though you will enjoy your results within several weeks, the appearance of your face will continue to improve and mature over the succeeding several months.
